The Beauty of Reiki

Last week, I experienced a Reiki attunement, a process where a Reiki master transfers attunement energies to their students. The transfer of energy is innately spiritual and creates an energy channel between master and student. The 8 hour course was offered as a free workshop at Boston Children’s Hospital, and as an employee, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in this special workshop. The group of women consisted of practitioners, nurses, and yogis. It was incredible seeing a group of eclectic and accomplished women gather together to enhance their practice. For the most part, the group was there to learn how to further enhance patient care, specifically to incorporate Reiki into their clinical care at the hospital.
Their passion, openness, and determination, to not only broaden their perspectives about modes of healing but also to improve the lives of their patients, was truly inspiring. I was essentially the odd one out as a 23 year old, with no nursing degree, wanting to learn Reiki. However, the novelty and curiosity I had towards Reiki for a such a long time encouraged me to sign up for this workshop. The workshop began with an introduction to Reiki, learning about its essence and the power it has to help others. Reiki is used to transfer energy through the seven chakras, as we as humans are energy beings, surrounded by a multi-layered luminous energy field. The purpose of Reiki is endless and determined by the Reiki practitioner, however for those who were in the room with me, their purpose was dedicated to improve the well-being if patients at the hospital.
Reiki was founded by Mikai Usui, after his divine 21 day meditation and fasting retreat in the mountains. Reiki was merely Mikai’s idea that sprouted into something that is now used globally to heal people. Mikai’s prolific epiphany is the reason why many terminally ill patients in the hospital are able to feel painless for a short moment and the reason why people eager to be healed keep coming back for more. Reiki is truly addicting. Its addictive property is reassuring, inspiring, and comforting.
During the workshop, there was a short discussion regarding the placebo effects of Reiki and as a clinical research coordinator who deals with placebo controlled studies regularly, I was immediately sucked into the frugality of this topic. There is no proof and no means of seeing a Reiki session scientifically “work” because it is intangible to the western medical field. It is merely a relationship between practitioner and patient and based on the conversations lingering in the room, this relationship is blatantly always postive. The vulnerability that is gifted to both practitioner and patient is magical. The trust and connection present is also undeniable. Reiki is used to improve the well-being of the patient, thus if the patient is benefited, then it can be said that colorful energy pulses through the patient to help heal, enlighten, and mend adverse symptoms. This Yin and Yang relationship between symptom and healing is what makes Reiki an endless practice.
For the past week, I have embarked on the sacred journey of Reiki. Every day, I have created a relationship and connection with my patient(s) through tangible energy. The effects of Reiki are remarkable not only for the patient but also for me, as the practitioner. It is my daily meditation, happiness, and luxury. Reiki has sincerely helped me find my daily peace and I am humble to have had the opportunity to be attuned. Reiki has made it easy for me to find my 3 minutes of peace everyday, an ethereal challenge I started in the beginning of this month, suggested by Kula Collective. This past week has showed me the profoundness of small shifts in my daily activities. I have learned to dedicate my whole heart and soul to this practice, and direct my intentions toward kindness, love, and grace. I have learned to not anticipate immediate effects and learned to value patience. I will forever continue to grow with this movement of my soul and relish the brilliance of Reiki.
